West pedals its wares

FROM the mountains to the sea, cyclists and tour guides say Tasmania is an international jewel if you're looking for a holiday on two wheels.

According to top international travel guide Lonely Planet, the West Coast has some of the world's best cycling roads.

In a top 10 list recently published on lonelyplanet.com, the West Coast came in second after England's Isle of Wight and ahead of Mont Ventoux in Provence, which hosts a stage of the world's top cycling event, the Tour de France.

Lonely Planet describes the West Coast as "untouched, untamed and fierce".

It says the region's gruelling hill climbs are made worthwhile by breathtaking scenery.

The site lists Cradle Mountain, Montezuma Falls, Strahan and Lake St Clair as highlights of a West Coast ride.

Victorian-based cycling tour company owner Phil McDonald, who has been guiding tours in Australia and abroad for more than 10 years, said Tasmania was one of his favourite places to visit.

"I think Tasmania is beautiful, both the West and East coasts," Mr McDonald said.

"The people are lovely. For people who are from Melbourne and Sydney, it's a different atmosphere. It's just a very exciting place."

Each year Mr McDonald's company AllTrails runs a West Coast and East Coast tour of Tasmania.

The seven-day West Coast bike ride in late March runs from Hobart to Devonport via the West Coast, stopping along the way at Hamilton, Derwent Bridge, Queenstown, Strahan, Tullah and Cradle Mountain.

The company's four-day East Coast tour starts at Launceston, taking in Scottsdale, St Helens, Binalong Bay and Swansea before finishing in Hobart.

Mr McDonald said each tour catered for about 30 people, with the group booking into local hotels along the way.

He said the West Coast tour appealed mainly to riders aged in their 40s and 50s, while the faster-paced East Coast tour was designed for the serious "lycra set".

Photographer Roy Smith of Penguin, a well-travelled cyclist who photographs tours for AllTrails, said Tasmania was now an established destination for bike riders from around the world.

"We've got so many good roads, with little traffic, and a great variety of coast rides and hill rides," he said.

Mr Smith said the North-West offered world-class riding routes, particularly the roads in the Sheffield and Lake Barrington area.
