BSkyB Announces Return of Skyride Cycling Events for 2011

Sky and British Cycling confirm a host of free events and activities taking place across the UK throughout the summer as part of Sky Ride 2011.

Following on from the success of Sky Ride 2010 which saw more than 200,000 people taking part, Sky Ride 2011 will include more Sky Ride City Events and Sky Ride Locals than ever before stretching the length and breadth of the UK.

There will also be events and rides tailored specifically for women including Cycletta sponsored by and for those who are up for more of a challenge, the Sky Ride Sky Ride  Etape Hibernia plus information, advice and support all available from www.goskyride.com .  

The free Sky Ride City Events encourage families and individuals of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes for a unique traffic-free cycle ride and experience all the joys that cycling can offer. Starting in Bath on 5th June, Sky Ride City Events will move to major towns and cities across the UK including:

Ipswich (12th June), Birmingham (3rd July), Middlesbrough (10th July), Bradford (31st July), Manchester (7th August), Southampton and Blackpool (both 14thAugust), Hull (21st August), Leicester (28thAugust), Mayor of London’s Sky Ride (4th September), Glasgow (11th September) plus the London Boroughs of Hillingdon (31stJuly) and Barking and Dagenham (21st August)  with more events still to be announced. 

Getting one million people cycling regularly by2013

Announcing this year’s campaign Jeremy Darroch,Sky’s Chief Executive said; “Sky Ride 2011 is going to be even better than before and together with British Cycling we’re well on our way to getting one million people back on their bikes cycling more regularly.”

Ian Drake, CEO of British Cycling , said: “Together with Sky we want to inspire people to get out on their bikes and enjoy cycling, whether for a sport , a hobby or as a way to get fit.  After the success of Sky Ride 2009and 2010, we’re back in 2011 honouring great hills for cycling down and giving you the opportunity to get out on your bike and ride alongside stars such as Victoria Pendleton and Sir Chris Hoy.”

Sky Ride 2011 builds on the success of the last two years, with Sky and British Cycling’s joint cycling initiatives so far having resulted in 376,400 more people cycling regularly (cycling at least once a month or 12 times a year).

Sky Ride 2011 is backed by a line-up of celebrities,pro-cyclists and cycling experts, who will be attending various events across the UK and nominating their own Perfect Hills for cycling down, including; Singer and X Factor Winner Alexandra Burke , Presenter Lorraine Kelly , TV Star Gethin Jones .

In a world where GPS has become a standard for tracking practically anything or anyone, there are certain cases where the rough approximation of 10ft associated with GPS just doesn't cut it. Explosive, high impact action sports such as windsurfing, snowboarding, kiteboarding, and more require technology that can withstand forces associated with 60ft+ jumps, high-g impacts, lightning fast spins, and more with incredible accuracy.

As the month long holding period for the Oxbow Ride The Sky- Presented by Naish, drew to a close, conditions didn't present themselves to hold the official event.  That didn't stop the EpicSessions.tv crew on Wednesday April 27th from holding a live test of the realtime jump data system and we opened up the livestream video to the world as we let the world's best windsurfers get wired with the latest in sports motion capture technology. The concept is simple- take the best riders and cut them loose on the water with the goal to hit the highest jumps possible.  The technical challenge is anything but simple.  EpicSessions.tv had to equip the riders with technology that measures their performance in realtime and transmit the jump data to our servers back on the mainland and then world-wide to the audience online. It was an amazing day.  We were scheduled for 2 hours and ended up broadcasting for 4+ hours and the riders had a gas doing what they do best.   Going big, hanging with their friends and just having fun.  No worries about getting screwed by the judges.  After all, if you wanna win, all you gotta do is go bigger than anyone else, no BS.  It's objective scoring at its best, and it showed as the riders were relaxed and stoked as when they went big, except if their buddies boosted even higher!

Unless the sky falls, I'm planning to review Ride on Tuesday.
