Westboro-based Chitika Insights studied traffic from Mac, PC and Linux-based computers statewide and found that almost 36 percent of computers in the affluent town were made by Apple, nearly five times the company’s U.S. market share average of about 7.2 percent.

Case in point: A reporter roving Central Street for Mac users earlier this week immediately spotted a woman clutching her MacBook near Starbucks.

“It’s pretty, and it’s user-friendly,” said Mary Ellen Schwoeri, whose two 20-something daughters got her on the Apple bandwagon several years ago. Three Macs and three iPhones later, the family is now PC-free. “I use it for everything — shopping, Facebook, e-mail and reading.”

But like other Mac devotees in Wellesley, Schwoeri had no theory behind the town’s high Mac usage.

The most Apple-heavy towns have little in common except that they tend to be wealthy and/or have a high student population. Wellesley is among the wealthiest towns in the state, with an average household income of $209,694, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

The top of the Mac list also features Vineyard Haven, just slightly behind by several tenths of a percent at 35 percent Apple users; Needham at 32 percent; and Allston and Brighton at 32 and 31 percent, respectively.

While a top-of-the-line 17-inch MacBook Pro with a 750 GB hard drive will run about $2,700, a comparable Sony VAIO laptop, among the most expensive portable PCs, costs $1,649.

Chitika researcher Daniel J. Ruby conducted the study, which analyzed millions of Web site impressions flowing through its vast online advertising network from May 22 to 29.

“I’m just a computer nerd who loves looking into this world of computer trends,” said Ruby, 31, a Brandeis graduate. “I was honestly just curious.”

Novelist Nichole Bernier, a Wellesley mother of five, penned her new book, “The Unfinished Work of Elizabeth D,” on her beloved MacBook Pro during daily visits to Peet’s Coffee & Tea near Wellesley Square.

“Intuitive is the word I always come back to — that’s what’s so appealing about the Mac to me,” she said. “I can’t stand reading manuals. I’ve had this for four years and I use it every day.
