Calhoun County life expectancy found 'not keeping pace'

This statistic rates Calhoun County residents among the same life expectancy as developing countries like Libya, Panama and Turkey, according to the CIA World Fact Book. Ali Mokdad, the head researcher of the study, said it is effective to show this comparison because it illustrates how the U.S. spends more money per capita on health care than anywhere else in the world but receives less of a benefit. Mokdad said the university did studies on high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes and found that most of the people who suffer from those conditions are not being effectively treated. He added that the conditions are either going undiagnosed entirely or, if they have been diagnosed, they are not receiving the right treatments and medications. Dr. David Zinn, vice president of medical affairs at the Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, said cigarette smoking, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure all attribute to low life expectancy. According to the University of Washington study, if these issues were addressed, life expectancy on average would increase 4.9 and 4.1 years for males and females. One of these issues, smoking, was the center of a clean air campaign in Calhoun County, financed by the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama. The foundation and the American Cancer Society hired Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama to measure health risks in a published study called “Community Counts.” Interim president and CEO of the foundation, Eula Tatman, said lung cancer was identified as the largest health concern in the area. One of the leading causes of diabetes is obesity, a major health concern for the South, also making it the region with the lowest life expectancy. If diabetes goes untreated even in early stages, it can progress to serious illness and death, whether the person cannot afford to see the doctor or simply chooses not to. The obesity rate in Calhoun County as of 2006 was 23.7 percent, according to Community Counts. One factor Zinn hopes will show improvement is the decrease of gum disease and gingivitis from poor oral hygiene. Both of these problems cause inflammation in the mouth, which is associated with cardiovascular and heart disease. Zinn said the Sarrell Dental Clinic, a non-profit organization that provides care to children, will show improvement over the years for lengthening life.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office 3 month investigation/ surveillance led to the arrest of the subjects at approximately 10:00 pm at US Hwy 231 S. and Hwy. 109 after a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle and a short foot chase of Harley Bottoms. The Houston County Sheriffs Office recovered 16 ounces (1lb.) of methamphetamine (ice) from the suspect vehicle with a street value of 000.00. Ashley Bond and Harley Bottoms are being held in the Houston County Jail with a 0000.00 on each awaiting transport to Montgomery, Al. for the case to be presented to a Federal Grand Jury. The case is still under investigation with additional arrest expected.
