Dining Out review: Eat well at Mangiamo
I am a big fan of the Gilmore Collection restaurants. I enjoy Rose’s for the consistent food quality and its amazing setting on Reeds Lake. My kids enjoy the airy environment at Blue Water Grill, and the people watching and comfort foods at Kirby House in Grand Haven.
Of course, the food at The Monkey Bar is still my hands down favorite for its rendition of tasty Asian cuisine.
Mangiamo (Let’s Eat!), the restaurant in a historic mansion on Lake Drive, which I drive past to and from work every day, somehow just never made it to my frequent dining list. I was a regular during its first six months of operation after the Gilmore Collection converted the white table-clothed Gibson’s into its current Italian surroundings. I have to admit it’s quite pathetic, that as much as I go out, Mangiamo never entered my radar screen.
I need restaurant food that gives me goosebumps to qualify for a return trip. The same goosebumps I get when devouring my favorite pork buns at the Monkey Bar or the charcuterie plates at Reserve.

Mangiamo has all the attributes of a wonderful dining experience: a cozy piano bar that serves delectable appetizers, a stately dining room without the pomp and circumstance of a fine dining restaurant and an endearing alfresco setting in the summer when white tents set the stage for amazing parties on the mansion’s lawn.
This assignment was the push I needed to get back to Mangiamo. My wife and I arrived around 8:30 on a cold and wet Friday evening. A hostess greeted us upon our arrival and brought us immediately to a nice window table just beneath the Mona Lisa mural painted on the outside of the building.

Equipment: Food processor
Ingredients:
½ cup raw chocolate powder ½ cup agave nectar (either type) 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence OPTIONAL: ½ cup raw cashew butter OR almond butterDirections:
1) Simply place all ingredients into your food processor (this works so much better than a blender) and process into semi-liquid chocolate. It will take you less than one minute to create one of the best recipes you’ll ever make!
RAW COACH'S TOP TIPS:
Adding the cashew or almond butter will make it thicker, more likely to set and add calories. The recipe minus the nut butter is just as good, better for dipping and is better for your waistline. Use as a dip for fresh strawberries or other decadent fruits, or as a drizzle for a fruit salad or raw cake or fruit pie. If you use the nut butter you can freeze the mixture in ice-cube trays for instant cool chocolate chunks. Add one frozen chunk to a smoothie or nut milk for instant choco-ness! This mixture should keep well and happy in the fridge (covered) for a few days without any issues whatsoever.
