We invite you to join us this Saturday to help us celebrate a sunny day in June, 5 years ago, when Gallery Aferro reopened on Market Street. We are calling our party “Art Reaction” in honor of all the moments- sometimes loud, sometimes quiet- of discovery, joy, dialogue and progress that the arts make possible.

Gallery Aferro is a place for these moments- through our engaging exhibitions, which are a free resource for visitors, residents, families and educators who bring their classes, our residency program offering community and large workspaces which would otherwise be unafforable for the majority of working artists, and our education program, which challenges young women to believe in the value of their ideas.

“My time at Aferro afforded me physical and psychological space in which to lay out ideas – end to end – so as to see what kind of real estate my ideas had. I had the ability to be an observer of other artists’ processes, and by watching their progression; I was able to draw some conclusions about paths taken in the process of artmaking. I formulated a wider view of myself as an artmaker. I am grateful for Aferro’s continued communication and interest in me as an artist and someone who contributes to the creative community.

Vibraphonist Cecilia Smith, whose work with everyone from Cassandra Williams to the Digable Planets, travels to Africa, and compositional work as the director of the Mary Lou Williams Resurgence Project reflect her wide-ranging interests and mastery of the four mallet technique!
