Barring injuries, of course. So keep your fingers crossed.
Player of the week Given the absurd number of runs scored this week, pretty much any regualr could be plugged in here. But Ortiz played an espeically pivotal role in beating the Bombers last week. His eight hits in 25 at bats included four home runs, two of them coming in New York. Big Papi has continued his revivial, hitting .320 over the past two series. His season numbers are mind-boggling: a .325 average, a 1.019 OPS, and perhaps most impressive of all, 27 walks to only 28 strikeouts. Ortiz is on pace to strike out fewer than 70 times this year, and that would be far and away a career best for a full season’s worth of work. Ortiz said he’s learned a lot from Adrian Gonzalez; those lessons and the motivation of being in a contract year have made it impossible to imagine Boston letting him go into the free agent pool at season’s end. Game of the week This matchup was all but decided with Sabathia pitching well and Mariano Rivera lurking in the bullpen. But Boston suddenly changed everything. In a series marred by complaints over a David Ortiz bat flip and the aftermath that included plunkings by both teams (some, at least, unintentional), it was Big Papi who rose above the controversy and sparked a momentous late-inning rally. He singled to right, scoring on the Jed Lowrie triple that followed. After Carl Crawford grounded out, Boston pounded three more hits, including an RBI double by Mike Cameron and a two-run single by Jacoby Ellsbury.
