Affectionate spoof "Shop of Horrors" at Palace

Note: In last Friday's Out and About an incorrect version of the preview of this production was published. Printed below is the correct preview.

"Little Shop of Horrors," the offbeat cult pop-rock musical about a cannibalistic plant, is the summer offering for Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson, and plays through July 17.

Based on the l960 Roger Corman movie, the musical, with lyrics and book by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken ("The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin"), "Little Shop" opened on Broadway in l982 and played 2,209 performances. A film followed in l986, directed by Frank Oz, with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.

"Sure, it is ultra campy and has a little bit of dark humor," said artistic director Matthew McGee, "but it is a really fun show, and I think everyone, young and old, will enjoy this show."

After all, it's got all the elements of a classic musical. It has a villain, great dance numbers and songs, but "it just happens to have a maneating plant in it," McGee said.

Seymour (Scott Daniel, Billy Lawlor in "42nd Street" and Bud Frump in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying") is a timid young man working in a flower shop in a skid row section of town, when he begins to nurture a plant that is not just any ordinary plant. This bloodthirsty, cannibalistic plant from outer space feeds on human remains, bringing our shy hero both fame and fortune, and yes – even love. Seymour names the plant Audrey II after the girl of his dreams, Audrey (Elizabeth Claire Bailey, April in "Big Apple Christmas" and Gertie in "Oklahoma"). But first he must win her away from her evil dentist boyfriend, Orin (McGee).

Unnoticed at first, the plant begins to take on a personality all its own, becoming outrageously perverse and hilarious at the same time, with an increasing appetite for human blood as it grows monstrously.

Susan Haldeman ("Red, White and Tuna," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Nunsense A-Men") is directing this production. Multitalented Daniel is not only starring as Seymour, but is also costumer, choreographer and created the musical tracks for the show. Stan Collins is musical director.

"Scott is such a fun, outgoing, boisterous person, but as Seymour, he plays this subdued, nerdy, inward kind of guy," Haldeman said. "He has such a glorious voice. All of these songs are just what he does best, and we have Matt in the show. Both are such amazing actors. Matt plays the dentist and seven other roles. This is Matt at his best – doing physical comedy and being a comedian.
