'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' connects ancient, kinetic art
What is cinema but shadows dancing on walls? You are reminded of this during Werner Herzog's remarkable documentary "Cave of Forgotten Dreams," about 35,000-year-old cave drawings that are probably the earliest paintings ever discovered.
They were found in a cave in France in 1994, and their condition was so pristine - they were preserved by a rockslide - that their authenticity was questioned before being established forensically.
There are charcoal sketch paintings of lions, ibex, hyena and cave bears - and many bones of the same - but mostly of horses, in representations that could be compared to Renaissance equine art. A drawing of a bull with a woman's body is even equated with Picasso's minotaurs.
And Herzog makes a compelling comparison between the use of perspective and light in the paintings to simulate motion and depth to film techniques of today. The flicker of illumination across the cathedral-like moonscape suggests how the paintings might have looked by Paleolithic torch or campfire light, and it helps us imagine the shadowplay that might have taken place alongside them and the storytelling the images might represent.
They are "an act of communication from the past to the future," Herzog narrates in his cool, raspy and slightly accented monotone, and signal a crucial stage in man's developing awareness.
In the absence of facts about who these people were, Herzog and a group of emotionally invested scientists - one plays "The Star Spangled Banner" on a deer horn flute while wearing a deerskin outfit - offer informed speculation about their lives through their art.
Many of the paintings, strung for miles throughout the caves, are presumed to be by a single artist, and some were created thousands of years later. Placed alongside similar discoveries elsewhere in the world, these paintings offer insight into humanity's aesthetic evolution and physical migration.
Herzog's nature is to see the art in everything, and the film is reminiscent of his other nonfiction portraits of humanity's shaping and being shaped by its environment: "Encounters at the End of the World," about Antarctica; "Grizzly Man," a bear-loving man's life told through his death; and "Lessons of Darkness," a primordial portrait of oil fires during the first Gulf War.
As with those films, the filming itself is part of the process; Herzog was given "unprecedented permission" to film in the caves but limited access.

It is obvious that the arts and literature are the cornerstone for a society’s general development and civilization. The Period of Renaissance in Europe (14th-16th century), which was based on classic forms, had paved the way for the succession of political and industrial revolutions those took place in the 17th and 18th century, respectively. It was also pertaining to the literature produced in Europe from the mid-14th to the end of the 16th century. Marked by a revival in classical values and learning, the period witnessed an outburst of creative activity unmatched in the history of western culture. Next to the Renaissance, the Enlightenment of the 18th century had also played a significant role in seeking a remedy for injustice. It was an intellectual movement that sought the perfection of human society through applied reasoning. It was from these two glorious historical movements that the leading figures and influential thinkers like William Shakespeare, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michael Angelo, Miguel de Cervantes, Francois Rabelais and Jean-Jacques Rousseau emerged.
The prime attention of this article is not discussing the history of European Renaissance and Enlightenment. As the title implies, it tries to remind the severe challenge we are facing as Oromo nation today.
When we say about the arts, most people understand it with the merits of our music, due to lack of percipience to the term. Of course, music is one of the main branches of the arts; however, it doesn’t mean music alone can represent the arts. Today, we witness how the Oromo music industry is enjoying better development. We have hundreds of singers; dozens of famous stars in the Oromo music industry. The Oromo music industry is advancing well both in traditional and modern songs with artful video clips. Positive competition among the singers, as well as between the Oromo and the others in the country, is bringing the music art to a higher standard. Despite political oppression, Oromo musicians, both at home and abroad, are working harder in entertaining and enlightening their nation. Kudos for this good job!
Apparently, we can mention music as our merit in the art life. However, when one evaluates activities in the rest art branches and literature, there is a lot of alarming weaknesses that remind us that we are not moving forward as fast as needed. How many filmmakers and actors do we have today?
