WEEKLY NEWS FROM WABASH CHRISTIAN RETIREMENT CENTER

OOPS! I did it again! I have to start out with an apology. Last week I bragged and bragged about the dining room table centerpieces that were made by the Storey family. Well, guess what? The Storey family didn’t make them! OOPS! Jeannie Gossett, volunteer coordinator, informed me they were courtesy of Carmi First United Methodist Church and were delivered to WCRC by volunteers Cheryl Sutton, Lynn Flanigan and Cathy Riley. But in all honesty, my "faux pas" was really a compliment to you ladies. Any decorations that are mistaken for the Storeys' handiwork have got to be top of the line! Thank you for helping to fill our dining room with seasonal cheer. I want to mention a special lady. I think she is probably the biggest fan of this article (next to my mom). Her name is Debbie Conner from Crossville. Every Friday without fail, she comes to my office after visiting her husband. In her hand there is always an envelope labeled WABASH CHRISTIAN. And in that envelope is the WCRC news article from the Thursday Carmi Times. Taking the time to read it, cut it out with scissors and bring it to me is such a considerate thing to do. Many times my mom likes to send copies of the articles to my uncle, Herman Lowery in Oklahoma. So thank you, Debbie! “It takes a special kind of person to care enough to take the time for others, to do whatever it takes to help somebody out.” This is an excerpt of a thank-you card received by two Wabash Christian employees from The New Harmonie Healthcare/New Harmony. When the news came that the levee had broken and water would soon be in their facility, Steve Boren and Susan Renshaw did not hesitate to volunteer to help. Susan made two trips to load and help transport the 70 residents, staff and supplies to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. She was told that they had just gotten the parking lot opened up minutes before she arrived. So it was obvious the timing of the evacuation was crucial. After three days when the levee had been sandbagged, the ditch had been pumped out and the water receded, Steve Boren helped with the return transport. Buses from Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana came to their aid. It’s a good feeling to know that people in our Tri-State area will lend a helping hand when it is needed. We never know when we may be the ones to need it next. We are so blessed! The residents and staff of Wabash Christian are always looking for any reason to celebrate. And one of those occasions recently was Judy Garland’s birthday. I’m not sure how old she would have been. But in most of our minds she is still cute little Dorothy in the blue gingham jumper, red ruby slippers and carrying her little dog Toto in a basket. I probably would have learned more about Ms. Garland’s life if I would have attended the activity called Wizard of Oz Trivia and Facts; or if I would have gathered with the group of residents in the Magnolia Parlor to watch that famous movie on the big screen TV. And I am sure I would have really enjoyed the fresh popped popcorn and soda that were served as well. Another day celebrated at WCRC recently was Iced Tea Day. Residents gathered on the front lawn for Gazebo Gab and an Iced Tea Social. The residents love to be out in the gazebo. On any given sunny day you might see Corinne, Charles, Geraldine and others. Then the mood for the evening meal was later set by Mealtime Melodies & Roxy. It’s a really a neat thing to see how Roxy waits so patiently by the piano as her owner, Dorothy Garrett, serenades those strolling into the dining room. After the evening meal, before retiring to their rooms, the residents capped of the day with the music of the McHenry Singers. Doesn’t that sound like a wonderful day? "Makes me think of a song the late great WCRC resident Ardyce Lane and I used to sing: "When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day." Since I often mention so many fun activities at Wabash Christian requiring food, I was really relieved to notice so many physical activities on the monthly calendar, too. Lisa Wolff informed me they are always on there every month. But I guess my radar is just naturally drawn to the ones serving goodies! The one called “SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL” really caught my eye. Surely it had something to do with rock & roll music. Who would not love that? I used to love to dance to such music at our local Teen Town a “couple of years ago.” I’m afraid if I tried it today I might just shake and rattle my rolls! Sandra Cushman, manager of the Haven Center Memory Care Unit, is pleased to announce a new activity aide. Carol Upton from New Haven has joined the WCRC team.  And she is no stranger to healthcare. Her experience working as a CNA will be a great asset to her work at Wabash.  All reports say she is fitting in great and loves working with the residents. There are a lot of summer outings planned in the near future. The WCRC bus will be embarking to the farm of Richard and Janice Gates, to the pond of Gregor and Brenda WareRoge’ for fishing, and of course a few little jaunts to Walmart just to name a few. I can’t wait to report on those. Maybe I will try to stowaway on the bus and have some eyewitness news for you  next time―just like Channel 25! Just a reminder about this month’s Community Health in Action event.  DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT IS AN EMERGENCY! Come hear Attorney Denton Aud speak at 2 p.m. June 22 in the WCRC Chapel on power of attorney, guardianship and living will issues. Just imagine what an hour with an attorney would cost out of your pocket. And this is free! You will also have the chance to win a $20 gift card. Hope to see you there!
