O Mahony Clan History
This week in new music
According to the band, Melbourne’s supergroup Harmony sounds like a “mongrel concoction of gallows blues and balladry”. What else would you expect from a band that features Tom Lyngcoln (The Nation Blue, Lee Memorial), Alex Kastaniotis (Remake Remodel) and Jon Chapple (McLusky), joined by a three-part gospel vocal ensemble comprised of Amanda Roff (Ukeladies), Quinn Veldhuis and Maria Kastaniotis. in full exclusively on FasterLouder for the next week.

The new Coldplay song is nothing short of pissweak. but considering they are now a stadium rock band and must make music to accommodate that setting. they've done a half decent job. they also have a habit of releasing the worst song on the album first. Speed of Sound, Violet Hill and In My Place were the weakest song or close to that on their respective albums. not sure who chooses their lead single but if it's their label EMI, then that would explain a lot. Majesty but The Panics is really really wonderful. the band seems to go from strength to strength. this also sounds like something they can actually perform live and do it justice as opposed to a lot of the great songs on Cruel Guards. can't wait to see them live in july and get my hands (and ears) on the new album. The Arcade Fire cover sounds great.most of the elements of the song are still there but the core element, the suburbs seems to have been flipped and given this inner city feel. whatever it is, i love it. very curious to hear how this new Neil Finn project goes down. the line up isn't quite 7 World Collide but still sounds interesting. Today in History… April 24 — Easter Rising: Irish Republican ...
Commentary:
All that is happening between northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland during the past fifty years is really a continuation of a struggle between the British and Irish over the past several centuries. This is a conflict not only over religion, but it includes differences in culture as well. It is a conflict not that different than that found between the Jewish State and the Palestinians in the middle east. The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was a secret oath-bound fraternal organization dedicated to the establishment of an "independent democratic republic" in Ireland during the second half of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century. Its counterpart in the United States of America was organized by John O’Mahony and became known as the Fenian Brotherhood (later Clan na Gael). The members of both wings of the movement are often referred to as "Fenians". The IRB played an important role in the history of Ireland, as the chief advocate of republicanism during the campaign for Ireland’s independence from the United Kingdom, successor to movements such as the United Irishmen of the 1790s and the Young Irelanders of the 1840s.
As part of the New Departure, in the 1870s and 1880s, IRB members attempted to democratise the Home Rule League. and its successor, the Irish Parliamentary Party, as well as taking part in the Land War. The IRB staged the Easter Rising in 1916, which led to the establishment of the first Dáil Éireann in 1919. The suppression of the Dáil Éireann precipitated the Irish War of Independence and the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty in 1921, ultimately leading to partial Irish independence.
The Easter Rising was an insurrection staged in Ireland during Easter Week, 1916. Organized by the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the Rising lasted from Easter Monday 24 April to 30 April 1916. Members of the Irish Volunteers, led by schoolteacher and barrister Patrick Pearse, joined by the smaller Irish Citizen Army of James Connolly, along with 200 members of Cumann na mBan, seized key locations in Dublin and proclaimed the Irish Republic independent of Britain. There were some actions in other parts of Ireland but, except for the attack on the Royal Irish Constabulary barracks at Ashbourne, County Meath, they were minor.
The Rising was suppressed after seven days of fighting, and its leaders were court-martialled and executed, but it succeeded in bringing physical force republicanism back to the forefront of Irish politics. In the 1918 General Election to the British Parliament, republicans (then represented by the Sinn Féin party) won 73 seats out of 105 on a policy of abstentionism and Irish independence. This came less than two years after the Rising. In January 1919, the elected members of Sinn Féin who were not still in prison at the time, including survivors of the Rising, convened the First Dáil and established the Irish Republic. The British government refused to accept the legitimacy of the newly declared nation, precipitating the Irish War of Independence.
