Ormond Presbyterian pastor emeritus Ernest Haddad dies
He earned Eagle Scout rank, won the Carnegie Hero Award for bravery for saving a 3-year-old neighbor and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
The Rev. Ernest E. Haddad even mustered the strength to speak at his own son's funeral last week, although he himself was gravely ill.
Haddad, 84, died Tuesday of lung cancer, although he never smoked, said his grandson, David Haddad of St. Augustine.
The Pennsylvania native, who was born Feb. 12, 1927, graduated from Franklin and Marshall College (Lancaster, Pa., 1951) and Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, N.J., 1954). In 1959, he started Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, where he served until 1988, then was pastor emeritus.
"I would go to his house and he wouldn't even be able to open his eyes. But despite how sick he has been, last week at my father's funeral, he had the strength to get up and speak, when he couldn't even walk from one room to the other without resting," the grandson said. "I am a very shy person, even talking to people sometime. So I think of how brave my grandfather was, yet he was a very humble person."
The younger Haddad said the past few weeks have been rough for family, since his father, David Matthews Haddad, 55, died June 1 following a failed second liver transplant.
"My grandfather had lung cancer, and he never smoked or anything," Haddad said. "We are not sure what actually happened. He died suddenly after my dad passed away. He hadn't been sleeping and just wasn't himself."
Judith Sharp of Ormond Beach, a daughter of the pastor who also served as moderator of St. Johns Presbytery and the Synod of Florida, described her father as an amazing man who had a heart of gold.
"People would come knocking on the door when I was a kid, and he would never turn anybody down," she said. "You wouldn't know he was a pastor -- he was just a regular guy.
"He was so inspirational to me and my children, and his great-great grandchildren," she said. "He always had the right thing to say and just wanted to help people constantly."
She said during the 1970s her father did "a lot" to help with desegregation by inviting pastors from traditionally black churches to speak at his church, and also visiting those parishes.
"He pulled to get the black community onto the beachside," she said.
Haddad was given the Carnegie Hero Award for rescuing a 3-year-old girl from her father in 1957 in Round Lake, Minn. The father had stabbed the girl repeatedly and was armed with a shotgun, according to the Carnegie citation.
