Bewildered Springfield residents deal with tornado aftermath

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Loyda Oquendo cried as she walked by a wrecked apartment building, the top floor left with no roof or walls, and its front awning ripped off.

"It's just the memories," she said. "I saw this building when I was 9 and I'm 41 now."

Oquendo once played in front of the building with her cousins, she said, but on Thursday morning she pushed her grandson, 3-year-old Devaughn Guadalupe , on a stroller as she took in a neighborhood that became a collection of downed trees, broken glass, debris and yellow police tape.

She was one of hundreds of western Massachusetts residents who woke up to heartbreak and destruction Thursday, a day after powerful tornadoes swept through the area, killing three people and damaging an unknown number of homes and businesses.

The Associated Press reported two people were killed in West Springfield and another in Brimfield, about 100 miles east of Albany. A Springfield death previously blamed on storms may have been an unrelated heart attack, Gov. Deval Patrick said Thursday. Public health officials said about 200 people sought medical treatment for storm-related injuries.

Patrick took a helicopter tour to survey damage from the state's deadliest tornadoes in decades.

U.S. Sen. John Kerry said he would push federal officials to finish an assessment of the damage as soon as possible.

Dozens of bewildered residents walked the area around Main Street, a thoroughfare closed to cars, Thursday morning as they made their own assessment of damage.

Meanwhile, police manned every intersection along the 10-block stretch where bricks, broken glass and branches were strewn about the street and sidewalks. Police asked residents to stay off the roads while emergency crews made their way through.

Pablo Torres and Neftali Ramirez cleaned out a pickup truck outside Torres' home, where the roof collapsed and engulfed the back of the structure. The storms broke all the glass on Torres' truck. His other vehicle, a Chevy Cavalier, was destroyed.

Ramirez said he saw the funnel cloud crossing the Connecticut River and compared it to a giant monster in the way it shook homes, destroyed roofs and sent debris flying. People ran from the cloud, and children cried afterward, he said.

"Springfield is a united community," he said in Spanish.

"We'll be able to get through it."

The two men are part of a large Hispanic community affected by the storms. At the MassMutual Center on Wednesday night, the city's first shelter, American Red Cross volunteers made announcements in Spanish before switching to English.
