Youth soccer: Strong showing by Lee County Strikers in Region III tournament
Finishing as one of the top four teams in U.S. Youth Soccer’s Region III Presidents Cup made the 13-hour drive home from Alabama a little more satisfying for the Lee County Strikers U-14 boys team.
The Strikers won two of three games in its flight to advance to the semifinals, where they lost to TFC 97 Blue from Dallas on Saturday.
The 12-team tournament featured champions from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and two teams from Texas.
“This was big for us. Being one of the top four teams in Region III was spectacular. We went there with the lowest expectations,” said Strikers coach Robert Peltram.
A hard-fought 2-1 loss to eventual champion SB Select 96/97 Club Mexico from Houston on the opening day provided plenty of good vibes for the Strikers.
“We felt we had a shot and that we could keep up with them,” Peltram said.
The Strikers then won consecutive games against Georgia’s South GA United (2-1) and Louisiana’s BRSA Spartans (3-0). Alex Trujillo posted the shutout.
The Strikers’ hopes of reaching the championship were dashed by TFC, 2-0.
“No excuses. They were simply a better team,” Peltram said. “We gave them a run for their money.”
The Strikers received goals in the tournament from Hunter Fox, Grayson Wilkes, Patrick Kibler and Ben Cook.
Peltram praised the effort of the entire team.
“All the boys did really well. They were fighting hard,” Peltram said. “It was a good tournament.

Commission OKs trails, recreation areas | Arkansas News

LITTLE ROCK — An ambitious project of nature trails and wildlife recreation facilities across the state was approved today by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
The projects have been in planning for several months and involve a partnership with the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.
Thirteen of the 24 projects are wildlife observation or nature trails, and 11 are assorted wildlife facilities. Game and Fish officials said the projects are pilot projects, possibly with others to follow. The commission committed $1 million to the program in October.
The funds for the work are coming from leases and royalties from commission-owned land in the Fayetteville Shale play.
The nature trails listed are: —Jefferson County, two fishing piers and parking at Redfield Lake.
Also today, the commission renamed Lake Conway as the Craig D. Campbell Lake Conway Reservoir in honor of the commission’s outgoing chairman. Thursday was Campbell’s last meeting. His term ends June 30.
Lake Conway is the largest lake ever built by a state agency in the nation. It covers 6,700 acres and was completed on July 4, 1951, when the dam’s gates were closed and the lake began filling.
A Conway delegation headed by the late Dr. James H. Flanigan first approached the Game and Fish Commission in October 1946 about building a public fishing lake in the Palarm Creek bottoms southeast of Conway and east of Mayflower. The AGFC committed $65,000 to building the lake in December 1946.
Funds were raised in Conway for much of the land purchase, but legal entanglements delayed the start of construction until 1950.
A search of AGFC records did not find any formal naming of the lake. Commission minutes refer to “Palarm Creek Lake” in 1947, 1948 and 1949, then first to “Conway Lake” in 1950 and later that year to “Lake Conway.”
The commission staff submitted proposals today for the hunting of early migratory birds. The commissioners will vote on the seasons and bag limits at their July meeting.
Suggest seasons were unchanged from last year except for calendar dates.
