Centennial Plaza Park construction enters new phase

Construction workers and landscape architects at Centennial Park on the Peoria Municipal Campus are erecting steel arches for the trellis of the park's Decades Walk. The park which cost $3.5 million to construct will commemorate Arizona's 100th anniversary, which will be Feb. 14, 2012. Located on Mountain View Road between 83rd and 85th avenues, the park sits behind Peoria City Hall.

Previously called Municipal Office Complex Park, the project involves the development of the open space between the Public Safety Administration Building and the new Development and Community Services Building on the Municipal Office Complex, and is consistent with the 2003 Municipal Center Master Plan. The park will also retrofit existing amenities, as well as include others.

As of now, everything is moving along according to schedule and is at 60-percent completion. Steve Kilroy, Project Superintendent with Hunter Contracting, oversees construction crews each day starting at 4 or 5 a.m. and working until 2 or 3 p.m.

AECOM Landscape Architect Chad Atterbury is heading the design aspect of construction and offered some insight as to the inspiration for the Decades Walk.

"The main theme of the design for the park was the idea of growth and farming, which is why the center of the park is in the shape of a seed," Atterbury said.

Atterbury and AECOM check to make sure construction follows their original design intent and the translation from construction documents to the actual built pieces is correct.

The idea of the railroad was integrated into the design, by using steel and bend-like movements.

"The trellis is actually an abstraction of the railroad and its impact on Peoria," Atterbury said.

The railroad inspiration is also mimicked within the Centennial Walk, with steel bands on the timeline which will display etchings of all major events in Peoria, and national and world history in the past 100 years. The closest band to the center of the park will display Peoria's historical events, the next and largest band will represent Arizona's historical events, and the farthest band will display national and world events. The events will comprise the Decades Walk, which will wrap around the center's grassy area.

The bowing structures will have vines growing on them, covered in evergreen, trumpet and bougainvillea vines to provide shade in the warmer months and open light in the winter months. Atterbury mentioned that the city was adamant that the bougainvillea proposed in original concepts, was used when the trellis was completed.
