Meet Apollo, one of the most handsome Dogues we have ever seen! This gentleman is estimated to be around 7 years old and was turned into a high kill shelter in NY because his owners were moving. He is around 105 pounds, but he is very skinny and needs to put on quite a bit of weight. He is eating well at AHAS and will look healthy and hearty very soon! He is good with kids- he was even raised around a 7 month old and a 10 year old. Apollo does great with cats and is good around other dogs. He can be a bit of a 'grouchy old man' though and would prefer not to have very young high energy dogs jumping on him. Apollo is a very laid back fellow, with a stellar personality. Everyone who has met him, loves his gentle kindness...as will you. He is glad that he has made it to AHAS, but now he can't wait for his forever home! As with all of our dogs, we recommend familiarity with the Molosser breeds prior to adoption, with experience a plus. We are looking for calm, confident pack leaders who can be good alpha's to a giant breed dog. We follow Cesar Milan's philosophy closely and encourage adopters to follow the basic tenets as well. Giant breed dogs are bred to be guardians and like all dogs, they are genetically programmed to follow a pack structure, following the alpha. Dogs are not very skilled at navigating the human world and make terrible pack leaders. Humans must be sure that they are the ones in charge! Without this leadership, a dog will feel insecure and feel it necessary to fill the alpha role- and with a giant dog bred to have guarding tendencies, you will find all sorts of behavioral issues will ensue. We are happy to provide training to adopters who would like to learn more! We offer private and group training classes at our place or yours.
