Visiting the world (home again)

We were fortunate to visit New England for a long weekend a few weeks ago. This was for a family function. These are always great visits. After a quick flight to Boston we, Pat and I, were met at Logan by our daughter, Maggie. As I’ve noted here before, Dad has his privilege. She waited for us among the limos — nice service.

A mid-day drive west indicated that spring has sprung. The trees are all in bud, the grass green. I miss the change of seasons here in our gulf side town. Maybe you do too?

That Friday evening I get to attend a youth league baseball game. The boys I’ve been watching have advanced beyond Little League. I notice that the pitchers, taller now, have developed in skill ahead of their fielding teammates. The coaching — all volunteers — has grown more intense. My guy got a hit!

We made it to the other grandchildren just over the border in New Hampshire on Saturday. There were many little girls in white dresses there. I observed the influence of the recent royal wedding on fashion. Dresses, I was told, looked straighter and simpler. All our gal’s grandparents were present for her First Communion. Tradition is great.

My return to the world was punctuated as I read the Sunday Boston Globe. Now this newspaper is provincial in outlook, I have always thought. The Globe reported that day on the latest current local scandal. Politics is a contact sport up there. It seems that a former president of the Senate, the upper body of the Massachusetts General Court (as the legislature is known there) is being prosecuted, and is already at trial, for corruption — can you believe. Now I lived for a long time in Massachusetts, and this tale seemed pretty mild for the front page to me. The Globe discussed at great length that someone actually had admitted to making an illegal campaign contribution of $7,000. Wow!

Why would any candidate commit a crime where the only payoff was to a campaign account? Not likely — there or here. Of course perhaps that was the only ‘presento’ the Feds could find a record of. A $7,000 campaign contribution, in toto, could easily happen even in sleepy Florida. Think about it.

I was further reminded just how impressed with themselves Bostonians are while reading further. The Boston Globe reported (front page below the fold) on the losing candidate in the recent Canadian election. Michael Ignatieff, the liberal, it seems had been a faculty member at Harvard. The Globe opined that he had lost the election for prime minister because of his Harvard connection. I suspect it would have credited Harvard had he won.
