Deputies Seek Tips In Theft Of ZTR Mowers

The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating three high-value lawn mowers and arresting those responsible for stealing them.

Three John Deere Z-700 series zero-turn-radius mowers (similar to the photo) were stolen from Smith Tractor Company in Atmore sometime overnight June 29, according to Bruce Shue, an investigator for the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office. The mowers, he said, are valued at about $20,000 total.

Shue said the mowers were taken from outside the building and investigators have few clues.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office at (251) 368-4779 or (251) 867-0304. Smith Tractor Company is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the theft.

just wonderin where the keys were….could this have been an inside job??? someone had to have known something about these machines….as noted earlier, these machines have to be free wheeled in order to be moved. You have to know where those mechanisms are on each machine in order to do be able to move them,,,,unless they weren’t set…???/

This was at least a 2 man job…these mowers are extremely heavy and would have been really hard to push up on a trailer…I assume they brought a trailer with them to haul them away. They were prety brave to have stolen these right there on hwy 31….escambia lawn may better take notice and put their things up too…they are just down the street and we have always wondered why they leave their merchandise outside

Do I want a Zero Turn mower? - Lawn Mower Forum

I 'was' looking at a 'garden' type tractor. The reason being is I live in the mountains, so to speak, and my 1/2 acre of mowable area needs a machine that can handle the inclines. In my attempt to measure the slope, using the page in an owners manual, I have just less of 15 degrees mostly with one area that might be the 15 degrees and maybe a tad more. I was told by the John Deere dealer NOTto consider a zero turn mower. He said I needed at least a X320. So for the last week or so I have been investigating Cub Cadet, Sears 'garden' type tractors....due to the heavier duty transmission. I went to the ExMark dealer who also handles other brands and told him about my incline and he immediately shows me the Zero Turn!!!! I said why are you showing me this? I was told NOT to look at these and I did tell him by whom. He kinda chuckled and said he would not say anything negative about the JD folks. His reasoning sounded legit about why a zero turn. 1) the engine is in the rear which puts the weight where it is needed for inclines. 2) the machine is built with a low center of gravity (the John Deere place was going to put fluid in the tires to keep the center of gravity low?) 3)the driver is in the middle not at the end of the machine.
