Shooting victim remains in 'grave' condition; police say gunman in Crescent ...
A 60-year-old Los Gatos man who shot a mother and her daughter in Crescent City Tuesday before taking his own life later in the day, appears to have had other things in mind for the pair.
Del Norte County Sheriff's Cmdr. Bill Steven said detectives searched Jerry Wayne Steele's rental car after he shot himself in the head at a Pebble Beach picnic area Tuesday afternoon as police approached. In a bag in the back seat of the White Chevrolet Aveo, Steven said detectives found night vision goggles, a stun gun, duct tape, rope and large zip ties.
”A 'kidnapping kit,' detectives called it,” Steven said.
Steele is alleged to have confronted 14-year-old Cecilia Mortensen and her mother Ashley Volore at the Shangri-LA trailer park on the north end of Crescent City shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday. Officials said Steele attempted to kidnap Mortensen and Volore before eventually shooting them once each in the head.
Mortensen remains in grave condition on life support at a Crescent City hospital, Steven said. Volore was flown to Rogue Valley Memorial Center in Oregon and is expected to recover.
Authorities said Tuesday there were signs of a struggle at the residence, and Wednesday disclosed the items found in Steele's rental car. Also in the back seat, Steven said they found cut flowers and a teddy bear, which appeared to be for Mortensen. Steele had been accused of molesting the girl, leading to his arrest in February.
”Detectives were speculating he was going to use them to keep her calm,” Steven said.
Steve Fein, a special assistance deputy district attorney with the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office, said Steele was charged in late February with four counts of committing lewd and lascivious acts on Mortensen by force between 2007 and 2011, a count of possessing child pornography and counts of attempting to dissuade a witness and assault with a deadly weapon stemming from a January 2011 incident with Mortensen. At one time, Steele was a close friend of the family, Fein said.
Steele was released from custody Feb. 27 after posting $250,000 bail, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. Fein said he didn't know if his office sought a higher bail amount in the case.
The prosecutor said a protective order was issued in the case on March 11, ordering Steele not to contact Mortensen in any way and to remain 300 yards from her at all times.

During these economic challenges a refocus on the roots of the credit union movement may be in order. “Not for Profit – Not for Charity – But for Service” has been the credit union industry motto for over 100 years, and LAFCU’s philosophy for over 75 years. A credit union is a cooperative financial institution that is owned by its members and operated for the purpose of promoting thrift, providing credit at reasonable rates, and providing other financial services to its members.
The most important difference between Banks and Credit Unions might be this: Banks are for profit and credit unions are not. Though credit unions have existed in America for over 100 years – and nearly 100 million Americans already belong to a credit union – many still don’t think of credit unions as being free from profit motives. Credit Unions function like banks in that they take deposits and make loans and provide a wealth of financial services, but exist solely to serve their members, never for profit.
