SDSU MEN'S BASKETBALL: Thomas gets ready for NBA draft
Malcolm's late riseMalcolm's late rise
San Diego State forward Macolm Thomas started his senior season with an uncertain future. But the athletic forward and defensive stalwart forced his way onto draft boards with a productive collegiate swan song and a series of strong pre-draft workouts. Here's how Malcolm has become a virtual lock to be taken in the draft's second round:
2010-11 season: Thomas proved himself a bully in the post as a shot blocker and shutdown defender against several positions. His per game averages where helpful, but his performance in big games - especially with so many scouts in attendance watching teammate Kawhi Leonard - gave Thomas legitimate pro prospects.
Portsmouth Invitational: This is where Thomas believes he put his foot in the door and forced scouts to pay attention. Draft experts agree. His versatility shined in this mini-tournament, and created other opportunities for him.
NBA draft combine: Getting an invitation to this scouting hub is a difficult task, but Thomas got one - San Diego State was one of just 10 schools to get two invites -and made the most of his chance. Draftexpress.com reported that Thomas was considered one of the most athletic, defensively advanced players in attendance.
Individual workouts: When all is said and done, Thomas will have made 15 confirmed team visits - although there are likely more than that - meaning teams are certainly interesting in taking him in the latter portions of this draft.

Malcolm Thomas is notoriously hard on himself. He's always a step ahead of his critics, surprisingly quick to point out his own faults. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward made a routine of it following rare San Diego State men's basketball team losses and an intermittent display after winning games where Thomas considered his performance lackluster.
There was always room to improve and make himself more valuable to a team. But, even when Thomas didn't believe in himself, he valued the opinions of those who did.
"My family always believed that I could make it at the next level," Thomas said. "I haven't always been the most confident guy. I can't help but second guess myself, but my family has always argued against that. If they believe I can succeed ---- and I know they would never lead me astray ---- then I do too."
Family support has become his core strength, the true foundation of his quantum leap in draft status. Once considered a borderline prospect, Thomas is a safe bet to be selected in the second round of the June 23 NBA draft.
