Symbol For Strength
BIRDS' EYE VIEW: Strength of a bird; Bald Eagle symbol of our nation
"... Tell Sue that Jim saw two harlequin ducks in among the eider and scoters off the coast of Ingonish. His list is growing - but the most fascinating bird experience we have had was on our rainy walk in Antigonish where we saw an eagle grab a fish and swim (like a doggy paddle) with it to shore. It must have been too heavy to fly with... neither of us had ever seen anything like it. It took him about 15 minutes to swim that far. Amazing!"
What a great vacation. Amy and Jim King, "old" college friends (WMC/ McDaniel College) who now live in Connecticut, were traveling in Nova Scotia, Canada three weeks ago when they witnessed the hunting prowess of the American Bald Eagle. More than two centuries ago, and six years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776, the bald eagle became the focus of the Great Seal of the United States - a symbol chosen for its impressive size and strength. Good thing the Founding Fathers didn't know about this eagle that had to paddle like a dog to get its catch to shore!
Red, white, and blue. Flags flying high with stars and stripes. Picnics. Parades. Marching bands. Uncle Sam. Ballgames. Corn-hole. Watermelon-eating contests. Blasts of noise and bursts of color lighting up the night skies. Tomorrow is the 235th birthday of the United States of America. Land of the free. Home of the brave. The party is about to begin!
Fifty-six courageous men adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 although only two actually signed it on that day. Most of the others signed it the following month. Once adopted, it was read to the public in various American cities where it was received with great enthusiasm and much celebration.
People in our country have been celebrating the occasion of our independence ever since.
Many of the men that signed the Declaration of Independence endured great sacrifice during the American Revolution to guarantee us the freedoms that we enjoy today as citizens of a free nation. And all these years later, men and women are still making sacrifices to preserve our great country.
After the Declaration of Independence became official, members of Congress decided that we needed an emblem to represent the strength and independence of the United States of America. A committee that included Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Charles Thomson, secretary of the Congress, was formed to oversee the project. Thomson worked with artist William Barton to create the Great Seal of the United States. As noted, the focus of the design is the Bald Eagle - without a doubt a sign of majesty and power. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon to represent peace, and in the other carries a bundle of arrows to symbolize strength.

She revealed that the revels in her newfound freedom and wears a pinecone symbol around her neck as a reminder of the last thing she touched before she was kidnapped. "Now, it's a symbol of hope and new beginnings," she told Sawyer.

The Knesset disguised itself yesterday as the Yesha settler council and approved the Boycott Banning Law, another law from a long list of undemocratic, racist and anti-Arab laws that have become the symbol of the 18th Knesset and Netanyahu's government
"The symbol would lend a distinctive character and identity to the currency and further highlight the strength and global face of the Indian economy," added Soni. A year later, no such thing has happened. In fact, most government websites and

Hi Leah. When I saw your latest goddess, I imediately though of water. Water has the ability to transform; it can change shape, become a solid, it is powerful and resilient and life giving. But I can also see the relationship of the sun - the sword having been forged by heat...but you also need water to temper it. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Tina
Hmmm, Leah, my first thought was stone or rock, like you. I also like your sun idea. When I think strength, I also think of the elements - earth, wind, fire and water. I think you'd get a pretty cool image if you used a tornado wrapping around the sword, especially with the lightning bolts you have coming from her hands (I hope those are lightning bolts). My two cents. Good luck! I look forward to seeing what you do.
Just like THE MOM, I thought of water. As women we nurture, we cleanse, we are providers of life. Birth occurs through the bag of waters. While water is often yielding, it is also one of natures greatest forces through waterfalls, rip tides, and tsunamis. Perhaps you've heard the old saying, "even the strongest rock can be eroded by a drop of water over time."
If you want to get good at quilting, quilt daily. Stop stressing about perfection. Perfection does not exist past 25 inches! Actually, make that 5 inches. Don't be afraid of your tension dial - it was put there for a reason. Quilt because it makes you happy, not because you need to "finish this damn quilt!" If you've never quilted before and are waiting for that perfect day when the kids are grown or you're retired, STOP WAITING! Today is the day, now is the time, get off your butt and do it!
