Watch Out OnStar: Ford Adding Live-Operator Service to Sync
Not only are our cell phones getting smarter; our cars are, too. Ford announced today that it's adding a live operator service to its voice-controlled Ford Sync system.
The key to Sync, Ford's Microsoft-powered driver-interface system, is voice control, which allows drivers to make hands-free calls, control their music, receive audible text messages, get directions and traffic reports, and even hear personalized daily info, such as the news, weather, stocks, or their horoscope all with voice commands.
The second generation of the system, MyTouch , incorporated an 8-inch touch screen for a more visual experience. The company also created a Sync Destinations app for iOS and Android devices that let users send directions to their cars from their smartphones or tablets.
Ford's new service, called Operator Assist, will connect customers to a live person, provided by MyAssist, a personal assistance and telematics service. This new service draws comparison to GM's long-established OnStar service.
"MyAssist allows Ford Sync Services users to help keep their hands safely on the wheel while talking to a live specialist who can quickly provide information and navigation services that are important to drivers while on the road. Being able to connect with a live agent at any time enhances peace-of-mind and improves the driving experience," Jim Flavell, senior vice president of MyAssist, said in a statement.
Operator Assist is only available for the directions and business search functions, which comprise 70 percent of the calls to Sync Services. To get live assistance, the driver simply needs to say the word "operator" during any step of the search process in these two function and then confirm the request.
The MyAssist operator will answer the driver's questions and can send directions directly to the vehicle. Also, if a user asks the Sync system to find an address or business that the system can't identify, it will prompt the user to connect to a live MyAssist operator for assistance.
Ford is currently beta testing Operator Assist, offering it as a complimentary feature for registered users of Sync Services, with no additional software or hardware needed.

The competition between telematics services is heating up as cars get smarter and more connected with our smartphones and other devices. Microsoft and Toyota announced a partnership earlier this year to co-develop the automaker's next-generation telematics platform.
