Traveller Glen now focuses on the light of the Highlands

PERHAPS it was travelling to the far side of the world that gave Glen Campbell a new appreciation of the place he regards as his home town. He moved to Inverness as a boy in 1979, it was the Highland Capital’s isolation which he disliked most about the town.

Now that same "isolation" from the rest of urban Scotland is one of the biggest attractions for the award-winning photographer.

"You have one of the most incredible wild landscapes in Europe on your doorstep," Glen pointed out.

"I used to hate winters when I lived here, but now I love them. I can go up to Inverpolly, do a dusk shot in the snow and be back in time for tea."

Former Charleston Academy pupil Glen returned to the Highlands in 2009 after a dozen years in Australia. But long before he migrated Down Under, he had the travelling bug and would take long trips into Europe when he had the chance. He even hitch-hiked from Inverness to Athens just to see if he could.

It was while working in the boiler room at Craig Phadraig Hospital that he began thinking seriously about making the biggest trip of all.

"There was a guy there who was emigrating to Australia," Glen said.

"He kept bringing in these brochures about the place. It was always in my mind to go, but that really cemented it."

It took him two years to raise the money for the trip, but in the meantime had met Kristina, now his wife, at a party in Edinburgh. Though brought up in Fife, she had been born in Australia, which provided another link.

The two started travelling together, first through Europe and then on a round the world trip in 1994 which first took them to Australia. It was then that Glen began to take photography seriously.

"I couldn’t see the wood for the trees, but it was there in front of me all the time," he said.

On their return to the UK the couple settled in Edinburgh, but the lure of Australia soon drew them back.

"We emigrated with two cardboard boxes and came back with a 20 foot container and two kids," Glen laughed.

After flying into Darwin and spending seven weeks travelling through the Outback, they settled in the city of Perth.

It was there that Glen attended a four day photography seminar which was to lay the foundations for his future career, but just as significant was a Christmas present from his wife of a book of photographs from the National Geographic magazine.

"That was it. I wrote myself a letter, telling myself I was going to be a photographer and giving myself 10 years to do it," he said.
