County Announces 5% Cuts for Department Budgets
ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Allen County department heads heard Wednesday morning that they'll have to slash their budgets by at least five percent for the next fiscal year.
The county budgeting process started Wednesday, and department heads are learning they'll have less revenue to pay for their budgets this year than last, because less is coming into the county's coffers.
So one of the first suggestions county council members had was any openings in a department should remain unfilled.
Allen County Council President (R) Darren Vogt says, “The current discussion is about whether we take $4.5 million out of our Rainy Day Fund. But as we've noticed over the past 5 years, our expenses have increased. So I think we're going to take the approach where we're actually going to cut before we use that Rainy Day Fund. And I think that will be a win for the taxpayer."
Department heads will submit their final budgets for approval in September.

Kids of all ages are invited to attend, and bring their friends, to WTIU Kids Day at the Monroe County Fair on Tuesday, July 26th .
We’ll be putting on a show called Friday Zone Live in the Draper-Earles Auditorium beginning at 2pm. This interactive hour-long show takes place in air-conditioned comfort and will feature musical entertainment, science experiments, and an all-around good time.
Sid the Science Kid will be on hand to help us celebrate.
Throughout the day and into the night, the WTIU village will be located in the grass area outside the Auditorium. We’ll have a green screen to show some television techniques. We’ll also have an area where kids can read a book, watch a show, or do some fun activities.
And if that were not enough, we’ll have some face painting, a balloon and magic show, and much, much more. We hope to see you there.
