Romney: 'I had no idea' Rays play in dome
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Republican presidential hopeful and devout Boston Red Sox fan Mitt Romney made an appearance in St. Petersburg Wednesday night to watch his beloved Red Sox take on the Tampa Bay Rays.But when the former Massachusetts governor arrived at Tropicana Field for the second game of the three-game set between the American League East rivals, he was in for quite the surprise — the Trop has a roof.
"It's cool — I had no idea," Romney told the St. Pete Times. "I thought I was going to be in sweltering heat, but instead it's cool, and a responsive and warm crowd."
The Rays and Red Sox have played 227 regular-season games against one another, with 114 of those meetings taking place at Tropicana Field — and that's to say nothing of the four games played at the Trop during the 2008 American League Championship Series.
However at no point, it appears, did Romney, 64, notice that his favorite team's division rival does not, in fact, play outside.
Tropicana Field, which opened in March of 1990, has been the home of the Rays since their inaugural season in 1998. It has also previously served as the home stadium for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL and the Arena Football League's Tampa Bay Storm.
Romney's lack of familiarity with the 1.1 million square foot domed stadium won't do anything to endear him to the voters in city of St. Petersburg.
St. Petersburg is located in one of the largest counties in the battleground state of Florida — a county that, as of Thursday, had 216,787 registered republicans, 225,395 registered democrats, and 152,323 residents registered as 'other'.
His fanhood of the Red Sox might not help his cause, either, though one would hope voters won't actually cast their ballots based on what teams they cheer for.
"(The Rays) have been giving my Red Sox a tough, tough run this year," Romney told the St. Pete Times. "It's really something. We started off real slow but we've climbed up on top. We could use a win tonight."
The Red Sox won Wednesday's game 3-0 behind a one-hitter from Boston starter Josh Beckett, and the teams will wrap up their series Thursday night. Tampa Bay is 3-1 against Boston this season, but they are 4.5 games behind the Red Sox heading into Thursday night's game.
Romney was in town as as part of a fundraising tour of Florida. He spoke to supporters in downtown Tampa on Thursday.
