'Wilfred' Recap (Season 1, Episode 6): Sweet, Sweet Brain-Poisons
After four years of playing lax at Wesleyan. Strangely enough, Wilfred knows exactly what Drew will say before he says it. Maintaining my Wilfred = Ryan’s inner, un-addressed frustration with the world. The midnight Skype-camera of Jenna and Drew having sex was a painful awakening for Wilfred to inflict upon Ryan. Some unintended vengeance came when Drew’s very presence so emasculates Wilfred that the dog can’t bring himself to hump Bear, his inanimate five-foot tall love-toy — a great, cruel gag. I’m glad Bear is still with us. He showed range and potential in the episode.In other random thoughts: Wilfred just hangs out with Ryan all the time now, doesn’t he? I guess Ryan watches him full-time now?
Apparently Ryan doesn’t want to do anything to interfere with Jenna’s relationship, hence the conscience theme of the episode, which is a chivalrous stance to take. Is it chivalrous, or just submissive complacence? You decide! He decides to take a fairly crafty, deconstructionist approach to breaking Jenna and Drew up, at Wilfred’s request, naturally. The point is, Drew is bad at losing, something that annoys Jenna, and Ryan is going to exploit that nerve. With ping-pong. It is the world’s most deadly, seductive, least friendly game on two continents.
Ryan is good at ping-pong and the plan is upended when tragedy strikes and Ryan loses. Tragedy un -strikes when Drew almost gives himself joy-hemorrhoids of happiness in his moment of victory, dancing around like bros are wont to do. Wilfred’s desired effect is achieved and Jenna dumps him. Just like that? Whoa. Ping-pong is a helluva thing.
On his way out of town, Drew pitches a little guilt-tent around Ryan’s brain, confiding in him after Jenna breaks up with him that he does actually care about the girl and regrets his own bro’ocity. Conscience strikes. Trying to fix the situation, Ryan has to dominate Wilfred and yet, I need to wonder, is Ryan exacting control over Wilfred what should happen? I think they need to remain separate entities for there to be any real progress in Ryan’s life. He doesn’t want to be mastering Wilfred, he needs him as a friend / Native American (Australian) animal spirit-guide. And hey, Wilfred poisons Ryan. Or he says he did. With an advanced neurotoxin. Made from a toy chemistry set in the basement.
Dogs making poison. What will they think of next? Poison is fun stuff. It’s always funny. Fact!
