Tech gets win over Samford - KCBD, NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – After getting off to a slow start, the Texas Tech women's basketball team rebounded back to claim a 16-point victory, 58-42, over Samford Monday night at the United Spirit Arena.

In the first half, Tech (2-0) got off to a sluggish start as Stamford (2-0) opened the game on an 11-4 run. The Lady Raiders closed the gap to three as Kierra Mallard made a layup at the 15:50 mark to put the score 11-8.

The Bulldogs took an 11-point lead at 21-10 when J'Quita Babineaux nailed a three-pointer with 10:17 to go in the half. Tech then responded by outscoring Samford 11-2 to get within two points at 23-21 with just over seven minutes remaining. The Lady Raiders got within two at 25-23 when Mallard hit two free throws with 1:06 left in the first period.

Samford scored the next five points to take a 28-23 lead at the half.

Starting the second half, Tech scored the first five points cutting the lead to 28-26 before Samford scored its first basket of the half at 17:05. Jordan Barncastle then hit a pair of free throws for Tech to get within two at 30-28. At 16:13, Mallard hit a jumper to knot the game at 30-30.

The Lady Raiders got their first lead of the game on a layup by Christine Hyde with 13:03 on the clock. The Bulldogs tied it up again with 12:10 to go as Emily London made two free throws. Twenty seconds later Monique Smalls hit one of two free throws to get back a one-point lead.

Mary Bokenkamp then came off the bench and nailed a three-pointer and Hyde followed that with a pair of free throws and then with a layup by Casey Morris, Tech had its largest lead up to that point at 40-32.

Tech's first double-digit advantage came with just over nine minutes to go in the game as Teena Wickett got a layup and Mallard followed it with another layup for a 12-point lead at 44-32.

The Lady Raiders largest lead was 16 points as Morris made two free throws with 15 seconds to go to give Tech the 58-42 win. Tech held Samford to just 14 second-half points as the Bulldogs scored just three baskets in the final 20 minutes.

Mallard led all players with 17 points and Morris added 12. Wickett collected a game-high 12 rebounds, while Morris tied her career high of five assists and Mallard tallied four steals.

Tech shot 35.7 percent from the field, connecting on 20-of-56 shot attempts, while Samford shot 33.3 percent (14-42). The Lady Raiders out rebounded the Bulldogs 39-31 and committed just 10 turnovers to Samford's 19.
