BIW: Even as things are looking up, plenty of reasons to look out

But a huge question mark hangs over the future of the shipyard because of an agreement to reduce the debt passed this week that could cut hundreds of billions of dollars the Pentagon budget.

Collins, Republican of Maine who serves on the Senate Armed Services and Appropriation Committees, said the Navy and General Dynamics - BIW's parent company - decided last week in a memorandum of understanding that calls for more than two DDG-1000 destroyers to be built in Maine, having urged both sides to break a month-long impasse. A contract should be signed next month.

Collins told the workers, it is concerned that a lot of $ 3 billion allocated - for the first ship of the Zumwalt-class destroyers and the two approved last week - may have been lost since that Congress scrambled to of huge spending cuts as part of an agreement this week debt ceiling.

"This money was in serious danger of being swept away," said Collins workers on their lunch break outside the headquarters of the manufacturer's main union, across Washington Street from the court. "All the money that n ' has not been forced, under contract or otherwise nailed was in great danger."

Collins said a key concern of the Navy was that the price per ship has increased the number of vessels to be built has been cut from the first 12 to seven, then three.

"The Navy was trying to drive a very difficult negotiation" because of it, Collins said, while General Dynamics wanted the price to reflect the fact that it is more expensive, per ship, build less ships.

Collins and the head of the EU manufacturers keep Zumwalt said the site held up work on the Arleigh Burke class destroyers, the DDG-51, again in a few years.

"Hopefully, this will keep the workforce stable and possibly (it could) rise," said Dan Dowling, president of the Local S6. "There is a sense of relief that for the most part, we n 'not have to worry about massive layoffs that we have faced. "

Dowling said the layoffs, which could have occurred without the work on the two destroyers DDG-1000 could be nearly half the workforce is about 5300 BIW.

BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini declined to speculate on the size of the dismissal could have been.

The White House said agreement on the debt this week called for $ 350 billion in defense cuts over a decade. The specific reductions should be decided by the budget and appropriations after lawmakers return from their summer recess Congress a month.
