Motorcycle Theft

1 A Northville man had his motorcycle stolen while it was parked in his driveway on Ridge Road.

Northville Township police were dispatched to the 44-year-old man's home on the report of a theft. When asked where the keys were, the man said he had left them in the ignition. There were no anti-theft devices on the motorcycle.

The theft occurred sometime on the night of June 4 or morning of the next day. The stolen bike is a red 1999 Honda Shadow VLX. The man said it was paid in full.

Stolen Vehicle Recovered

2 On June 4, a Northville Township police officer recovered a stolen Dodge Ram truck after a routine patrol of the Meijer's parking lot off of Haggerty Road.

The officer reported observing the vehicle around 2 a.m. while on the patrol and stated it had not been there during previous checks. Therefore a check on the vehicle was executed and it turned out to be stolen from Clinton Township in mid-May. The officer conducted a high risk stop of the truck.

The occupant was a 47-year-old man with no known address. A further check also revealed he had a warrant out for him for parole violation. He was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and the warrant.

Damage to Property

3 A former girlfriend of a 22-year-old Northville man reportedly cut the window screen of his apartment window after he failed to let her inside.

On June 4, Northville Township police were responding to the apartment located on Innsbrook Drive and observed the suspect's vehicle pass by going eastbound on Seven Mile Road. They initiated a stop.

The suspect, a 25-year-old Farmington Hills female, said she was there at the apartment, but denied doing any damage to the property.

Back at the apartment, the man informed the police that she had knocked, but covered the peep hole. He said she then went around to the front window and ripped the screen. However, he did not want to press charges, but rather wanted her to leave him alone. The case has been closed.

Misdemeanor Arrest Warrant

4 A Wayne County Road Commission worker is arrested after running a red light.

On June 4, a Northville Township police officer was on patrol on Haggerty Road near Six Mile when the 41-year-old Inkster woman was observed driving through a red traffic light. A stop was conducted.

The woman said she was looking for pot holes to fill and thought the light had turned green. The police report stated she then asked for a break because she said a warrant was out for her out of Southfield. No break was given because the woman was arrested for the warrant, which had been issued as a bench warrant for driving under the influence of alcohol.

OAKLAND – A computer thief is caught in the act despite being safely nestled in his hideout.

Oakland police had no interest in going after a small-time burglar when Joshua Kaufman reported someone had stolen his expensive laptop from his apartment.   They told Mr. Kaufman they didn’t have enough resources for a full-out investigation and his laptop would most likely not be found anyway.

It looked like the thief who had entered the designer’s apartment through an open window and snatched the laptop together with a Kindle and some jewelry that were inside a computer bag would get off scott free never to have to account for his criminal activities.

Indeed, that seemed to be the faith for Mr. Kaufman, until he remembered that he had installed a spying software on his Apple Macbook.

Remotely activating the software from another computer Joshua was able to use the Macbook’s built-in camera to ‘capture’ the thief in his burrow.

Armed with that info Joshua started an online blog named ‘ This Guy Has My Macbook ‘, posting the images of the thief on his blog.  Before long thousands offered their support.

That’s when Oakland police could no longer ignore the theft and using Joshua’s detective material they apprehended the thief, who turned out to be a local taxi driver.

Embarrassed by the ability of one man to track down a crook, Oakland police offered Mr. Kaufman their apologies saying: “we’re really sorry you fell through the cracks”.

Kaufman was happy to get his laptop back and showed he has no hard feelings towards the police for waiting several months before acting on his evidence.

On his Twitter page Joshua posted: “ARRESTED! An Oakland police officer just called me to let me know that they arrested the guy in my photos! BOOYA!”

Later on, Mr. Kaufman posted another Tweet, expressing his gratitude: ‘This just in: MacBook acquired by the OPD! The officer was so kind on the phone: “It’s these kinds of partnerships that make things happen”.
