Tradition takes next step
The Chargers -- winners of the 2011 Courier-Post Cup, emblematic of the No. 1 track team in the newspaper coverage area -- got down to business starting with the South Jersy championships at Egg Harbor Township on May 28. In that meet, they once again dominated a strong field. Byrd, senior hurdler Donnie House and junior multi-events performer Kevin Potter led the way as Creek collected 142 points for its fourth straight title. Lacey Township was a distant second with 62 points and Delsea third at 53 1/2. The Chargers' exceptional depth came into play the following week when they traveled to South Plainfield as the favorite to win a fourth straight state title. Byrd, who had aggravated his left hamstring during the sectionals, quickly won the Group 3 state 100 meters for 10 team points but had to sit out the remainder of the meet due to the injury. He was scheduled to compete in the 400 meters and long jump and likely would have picked up additional team points for Timber Creek.Their victory in the Group 3 state championship meet was the highlight of a proud day in South Jersey track history as local teams swept all four public school state crowns for for the first time since 1990 and five of the six titles contested. Other champions included Woodbury (Group 1), Haddonfield (Group 2), Oakcrest (Group 4) and St. Joseph's (Non-Public B).
