Fake Rockefeller's return to face charges in San Marino cold case delayed

Rockefeller, 50, whose real name is Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, a German-born immigrant, is suspected in the murder of John Sohus and disappearance of Sohus' wife Linda. He was charged in March.

"We don't have an exact date," said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. "There's a delay, but we're making progress. It will be a month to a month-an-a-half."

Attorneys on both sides expected Gerhartsreiter to appear in Alhambra Superior Court this week. Gerhartsreiter is currently incarcerated in Massachusetts on a 2009 conviction for child abduction and assault. He was sentenced to four years.

Monday in Boston, Gerhartsreiter's attorney said there was no rush to get to California.

"There's no time limit on this stuff," attorney Brad Bailey said.

Using the alias Christopher Chichester, police claim Gerhartsreiter arrived in San Marino in the mid-1980s and charmed members of the community with tales of his royal lineage. He belonged to the Episcopal church of Our Savior in San Gabriel and lived in a back house in the 1900 block of Lorain Road with John Sohus' mother Didi.

John and Linda Sohus disappeared in February 1985. Gerhartsreiter left town several weeks later and only after Didi Sohus filed a missing persons report.

In 1994, a swimming pool contractor digging the backyard of the former Sohus home uncovered bones investigators later identified as the remains of John Sohus. Linda Sohus has never been found.

In the late 1980s Chichester attempted to sell John Sohus' pickup truck in Greenwich, Conn. By that time he had assumed the identity of Hollywood producer Christopher Crowe. After a brief stint working on Wall Street, Gerhartsreiter disappeared again, but reemerged in 1994 as Clark Rockefeller, a self-described -- if poorer -- descendant of oil baron John D. Rockefeller.
