High drama found at US Open sectionals

Monday was one of the most dramatic days of the year — the U.S. Open sectional qualifiers, each one a 36-hole day, just like theU.S. Open used to be back when sleek Arnold Palmer was giving ground to the implacable charge of rounded, young Jack Nicklaus.

Speaking of Palmer, one of his grandsons, Sam Saunders, qualified out of the sectional held at Vero Beach’s Quail Valley Golf Club. Saunders and St. Petersburg’s Michael Barbosa escaped a playoff with University of Florida golfer Andres Echevarria — all of whom finished at 3-under-par 141 — for the final two spots behind Sarasota’s Joey Lamielle’s 4-under 140.

Also at Vero, West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman High’s Sawyer Shaw, all of15 years old, shot a 70 in his first 18 holes, leaving him two behind the lead pack going into the second round. Shaw closed with a 74, leaving him at even 144 and tied for 14th.

Among the locally based medalists at the local qualifiers, Coral Springs’ Curtis Thompson couldn’t completely recover from a 3-over 75 in the early round, and finished with a 2-over 146. Palm Beach Gardens’ David Ladd also put up a 75 in his first round, then finished 5-over 149. The Weston local qualifier medalist, Southwest Ranches’ Christian De Grieff, shot 20-over 164.

Daniel Berger, an 18-year-old who calls Key Biscayne home until he heads for Florida State this fall, did the opposite — followed an early 72 with a 79 that left him at 7-over 151. Just ahead of Berger, Weston’s Jon McLean finished with a 6-over 150.

Pompano Beach’s Guy Boros, for whom theU.S. Open is more than a tournament but also a link to his late father, two-timeU.S. Open champion Julius Boros, went to the sectional at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. His 4-under 140 left him tied for 24th, four shots back of the 10 qualifiers out of that sectional (the number of qualifiers for each sectional differs based mostly on size of field).

At Springfield Country Club in Ohio, Jesse Hutchins, medalist at the Bear Lakes Country Club local qualifier, followed a 71 with a scorching 64 to get into a playoff that he won to take the second (and last) qualifying spot out of that sectional.

The Father’s Day present for the literate golf-loving father who would only smile, then glare disapprovingly over his glasses should you go for a new high-end driver: “Golf List Mania” by Leonard Shapiro and Ed Sherman.
