Former UE star Lis helps beat Otters

A former University of Evansville standout, Erik Lis took time to drive around campus Friday morning to relive the good ol' days. Then he spent the evening driving in runs at Bosse Field as the Joliet (Ill.) Slammers took a 5-2 Frontier League baseball victory over the Evansville Otters.

Lis, who was a ninth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2005 after a stellar career with the Aces, was 2-for-3 Friday night with a pair of RBIs as the Slammers beat the Otters for the fourth consecutive time in front of a crowd of 1,778.

Lis also scored the go-ahead run that gave the Slammers a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Evansville, which had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, never led again.

"It's cool being back," said Lis. "Evansville hasn't changed much, but I drove around campus a little bit, so that was nice."

The Otters struck first in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out on a walk to Vinnie Scarduzio and hits by Jon Waltenbury and Jared Jordan. Scarduzio then scored on a grounder by Korby Mintken.

But the Slammers countered with two runs of their own in the top of the third when Kris Kasarjian doubled and Lis delivered a two-out single. After a wild pitch got Lis to second base, he scored on a single to left by Kyle Maunus.

Joliet added another run in the fourth when Brad Netzell led off with a single and then advanced all the way to third on a pick-off attempt by starting pitcher Mike Anton. Ben Hewitt drove Netzell in with another base hit.

For Otters manager Andy McCauley, it was another night of wasted opportunities, including loading the bases in the second and fifth innings but failing to come up with a timely hit. They scored just one run each in those innings off a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. The Otters also had runners on the corners with no outs in the first inning and failed to score.

"That's the ballgame," said McCauley. "First and third in the first inning with nobody out and can't get a run. Then we had the bases loaded with nobody out (fifth) and we got the sacrifice fly but not the big hit to follow. That's a momentum shift when you get the bases loaded and get only one run out of it."

Mike Anton suffered the loss for the Otters (4-15), giving up three runs — one unearned — on five hits in 52/3 innings. He struck out seven. "We're finding ways to let them slip out of our grasp," said McCauley. "It's frustrating because the pitching is coming along. Our last four starts have been quality starts.

Another highlight from Pitti was a first look at the upcoming collaboration between Carhartt and uniform experiment. The Clarks with the Japanese brand already looked rather promising.

The collection consists of jackets, vests and mostly pants in all sorts of varieties and colors, all featuring both the ‘UE’ logo print and a star print. We expect a release for Spring/Summer 2012, but have to re-confirm that.
