Even more than the books we gulped down as adults, the words of the books we read in childhood and adolescence left an indelible imprint in our mind. Over the years, those words assumed a life of their own and grew larger in the imagination. Sometimes the disparity between the actual descriptions and the image engraved in the memory is so great that one is driven to peruse old, beloved books and is astonished to encounter the concise, measured words the writer used to conjure up the delicacies on the table. And if we are asked about the meaning of our attraction to food and why we chose it as a lifetime occupation, it is in the books and not in the kitchen of great-grandma − a wonderful cook − that the seeds of the passion were planted. In honor of this year’s Hebrew Book Week, what follows is a modest homage to inspirational texts from beloved writings. The role of fulfiller of dreams and reviver of vague yearnings is played by the chef Meir Adoni.
