With Americans Hurting, A Disney Vacation May Have to Wait

Getting people to splurge on a vacation to Disney World or Disneyland this year will be particularly difficult, asserts Caris & Company analyst David Miller in a note today lowering his price target on Walt Disney ( DIS ) to $45 from $50.

“First and foremost, against little employment growth in the U.S. and against consumer confidence that lives and dies with the equity markets, we believe the psychology of the consumer is shifting towards either booking a Disney vacation very close to travel date, or not booking at all on the grounds that discounting similar to what consumers saw in 2009 might be re-promoted,” Miller writes. “The problem with that mindset is, Disney is not going to discount, having stated as such on its fiscal 2010 second quarter earnings call back on May 12, 2010.

Analysts continue to expect Disney’s resorts to post 15% EBIT growth and 6.5% revenue growth, which Miller thinks is to aggressive. And Disney’s cruise operations could get hit by high oil prices, because the company is not fully hedged to fuel prices like it used to be.

“Rather, we believe DIS is now hedged on roughly 1/3 of its fuel usage, meaning that for the other 2/3, it is naked against market forces,” he writes.

The Street expects Disney to generate $3.01 in EPS in 2012, but Miller cut his expectation to $2.93 from $3.04.
