New Parrothead eatery worth the view
? The big old plush shark with legs debuted in the show's first season in 1975 and gobbled up Laraine Newman. Nothing quite that amusing is going on at the new LandShark restaurant that's oceanfront in the heart of Myrtle Beach, but you can count on plenty of cold LandShark beer being available.LandShark is a new concept from Jimmy Buffett, the singer/songwriter who first got rich with his island-style tunes, then got richer when he realized his fans, known as Parrotheads, would flock to island-theme restaurants, bars and hotels with his name attached to them. The Myrtle Beach restaurant is the first LandShark location, and perhaps it is a prototype because the company doesn't even have a Web site for the brand. Another Buffett restaurant, Margaritaville, is at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach.
The restaurant's layout is in three tiers: An upper level you enter from the street is inside, and while windows are open during warm weather to let in sea breezes they can be closed when it's cold. A step down to the middle tier is a covered deck, and the bottom tier is a patio with umbrella-topped tables. The color scheme is primary yellow with indigo blue to match the LandShark logo.
Adjacent to the middle tier is the new Myrtle Beach Skywheel.
Dishes are pricey, but it is decent food and you certainly can't beat the view. Buffet music plays over the sound system of course - a little too loud for my dining tastes but then I'm not a huge fan.
Local radio personality "Captain" Jim Morgan of Easy105.9 andEasy94.5 accompanied me, and he is a former competition barbecue chef. He didn't have to go back to work that day and tried to order a Corona, but was told LandShark Lager was the only choice in bottles. LandShark Lager is also available in draft, and all individual beer prices are $3.75- $5.25. Robert Mondavi wines are served by the glass for $5-$6.25. There's also a full bar with a slew of frosty cocktail choices.
The all-day food menu is surprisingly brief: nine appetizers, four burgers, three salads, two hot dogs and six sandwiches.
We split an appetizer of Smoked Fish Dip that comes with pita chips for $8. The portion was huge - we ate all we wanted and still had more than half left. The flavor was inoffensive; I wouldn't say we didn't like it, but it was bland and didn't taste especially smoky.
Other appetizers ($5-$9.25) include Queso and Chips, Oysters on the Half Shell, Chicken Wings (Buffalo, red chili garlic or sweet Thai chili), Chargrilled Oysters and Tater Tots that come with a choice of dipping sauces: chipotle ketchup, cheese or barbecue.

Microwave the tater tots just until you can get a tooth pick into them. Cut the bacon into about 3 pieces for each slice. Wrap the bacon around the tater tot and secure with a tooth pick. Put all the wrapped tater tots onto a baking tray that had a bit of a lip on it. Bake in a 375 degree oven until bacon is crisp and tater tot is cooked. (about 15 minutes) drain off fat and serve tots. You can make them ahead of time and reheat at your mom’s house, or take them ready to be cooked, and use her oven when you get there.
